Governor Evers has declared a public health emergency effective at Midnight tonight (March 16). The Governor’s decision includes forbidding any public gatherings of over 50 people. He provides exemptions for grocery stores, child care centers, hospitals, and pharmacies – but chose not to exempt places of worship. Following Governor Evers’ decision, Bishop Callahan today decreed that all public Masses are to be cancelled in the Diocese of La Crosse beginning on March 20 and until further notice, as well as other public church gatherings.
We plan to increase opportunities for the Sacrament of Confession and for personal prayer in our church – as long as we can figure out how to ensure that we comply with the requirements. We will also pray and discern how we can be an evangelizing presence to a world that needs good news right now! Please check this website regularly for updates.
In the event you cannot go to communion in person, we strongly encourage you to take the time to make a spiritual communion, praying for all the same blessings and graces from the Lord. You can use these or similar words:
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from You.
